The Department of General Systems Studies is a part of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The faculty members conduct research across a wide spectrum of natural, information, and social systems.

For information about the department and graduate program, see the Japanese site.

To prospective graduate program applicants:

Most courses in the Masters and Doctoral Programs in the Department of General Systems Studies (GSS) are taught in Japanese. In addition, the current entrance examination for the GSS Masters Program assumes Japanese proficiency. However, many of the GSS faculty have joint appointments in the new, Graduate Program on Environmental Sciences (GPES) which is taught in English. Prospective applicants who would like to conduct research with a GSS faculty member but would prefer to take courses in English should apply to the GPES Masters/Doctoral programs.
